Since earliest days, computer systems are designed with an indea that data can be easily accessed and shared over network. Windows operating system therefore is not an exception. In fact, on windows OS, this can be achieved quite easily. If You have 2 or more PC-s in Your network, it's possible to share your files and folders between different computers and folders. Data from 1st computer or device connected to another can be easily accessed from 2nd device, and other way around.
Sharing files and folders on windows can be easily achived by right-clicking on a file or folder that we want to share and going into properties.
In the sharing tab by clicking share button we can set up sharing options and define users to whom we would like to allow the access:
Also at the end of the sharing tab, there is link to Network and sharing center where it's necessary to define sharing options for different network profiles. Basicaly, this is a way of automatic firewall configuration. Windows configures firewall rules by user input and selected options, so that share can be accessed over the network:
In the advanced sharing field, we can define the name of our network share,
, and setup some custom premissions for users to whom access is permitted or denied:
Once this is done, we can see full network path of our new shared folder:
Shared files and folders can be also seen and managed from Shared Folders Snap-in. Shared Foledrs Snap-in can be easaly accesd by going to Start > run > and entering "fsmgmt.msc":
Shared folders:
Accessing shared files or folders on windows is pretty simple, and since for shared access to files, printers and serial ports Common Internet File System (CIFS) or Server Message Block (SMB) protocol is used, accessing shares from various other systems that implement this or some other kind of networking access software is also possible.
To access netowrk share on Windows, simply enter the address or network path of network shared folder in run box or in address bar of explorer:
